I learned Java in 1995 and used it ever since. And if you want to know why, look at the major in use tools today in the enterprise, built on the JVM. Kafka, Hadoop (yes, there are lots of large installs out there), Cassandra. All the big heavy lifting stuff that's powering commerce.

I know a couple of COBOL programmers making a complete mint too :)
